The College of Arts and Sciences will
provide a limited number of summer fellowships to tenure-track
or term faculty. To be eligible for this competition, you
must be a tenure-track or term faculty member, and you must
simultaneously submit your proposal to the
Research
Council Junior Faculty Research Program competition
for a summer fellowship (unless you are not eligible for that
competition.) The previous Research Council competition application
deadline
was January 10, 2005. Please check with the Research Council on the next deadline in January, 2006. The proposal
format for the Arts and Sciences Junior Faculty Summer Fellowships is the same as that required by the Research Council, but proposals should
be written in language that will be intelligible to faculty outside your particular
field. The deadline for receipt of Junior Faculty Summer Research proposals in
the College office is March 1.
ELIGIBILITY:
Any tenure-track or term faculty member in the College is eligible to submit
a proposal for this competition. However, if you are eligible for the Research
Council’s Junior Faculty Research Program, you must submit to that
program in order to be eligible for the College program. A faculty member should accept the Research Council Award if it is offered, and will then not be permitted to accept the Arts and Sciences Award in that award cycle. If you are not successful
in applying to the research council program, your proposal will automatically be forwarded to the College
and entered in its competition. There is a limit of two such college awards per faculty member over the years of eligibility. Also, a condition of accepting such an Arts and Sciences Award is that the faculty member will remain with the University of Oklahoma for at least one academic year after the summer of the award.
APPLICATION:
Application for the program should follow the same format as the Research Council.
Those submitting to the Research Council program may use the same proposal
for Arts and Sciences. If the proposal used was previously submitted to the Research Council, the faculty member should determine that the proposal materials include at least the information indicated below, and anything else needed for the Arts and Sciences program. If the faculty member did not have to apply to the Research Council Program, but is submitting to Arts and Sciences, kindly be guided by the following instructions. Please submit thirteen (original + 12) copies of each proposal.
For those submitting only to Arts and Sciences, the materials submitted should
have the following format:
- Application Cover Sheet (same as Research Council
form).
- A proposal which describes the research plan and how
this plan relates to the applicant research development
goals.
- Anticipated outcomes of the research program should
be described to emphasize quality factors (e.g. publications)
and to define the potential for external sponsorship
of the research (planned proposals, sponsors, sources).
NOTE: Together, Items #2 and #3 are limited to a total of ten pages.
- A current copy of the curriculum vitae.
- A summary of funding received from the Research Council,
the College of Arts and Sciences or other sources (a)
to support the project for which support is currently
sought or (b) to support other projects. Also, include information about how previous Research Council Junior Faculty Research Fellowships or College of Arts and Sciences Junior Faculty Summer Fellowships have yielded results for the faculty member's research program.
- A letter of endorsement from the department chair.
This letter must include what additional support services
(i.e., secretarial director, research assistant, laboratory
equipment, supplies) the department will provide.
NOTE! A binder containing samples of successful proposals
is available for viewing in the Dean's office, Ellison
Hall 323. You may view the samples Monday through Friday
between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
If you have any questions about this program, please contact
Edward Sankowski in the Dean's Office at 325-0321 or esankowski@ou.edu
EVALUATION OF PROPOSALS:
Proposals will be evaluated and rated by the A&S Support of Teaching and Research Committee and rank ordered recommendations provided for the College administration, including the dean. The Support of Teaching and Research Committee is an elected committee whose membership (faculty plus student representatives) changes somewhat from year to year, and its views about priorities will vary accordingly in light of changes in membership. A&S awards will be announced after the announcement of the Research Council awards, with time for subsequent College of Arts and Sciences decisions. |
