A&S Recruiters' Day Great Success for Employers and College
Making connections with corporate, governmental and non-profit organizations that might provide internships for A&S students or jobs to A&S graduates was the focus of Recruiters’ Day on July 26. Nearly 50 human resources professionals spent the day learning more about the value of hiring OU’s A&S graduates.
After hearing from Bette Scott, director of Career Services, who outlined ways that recruiters can make contact with students who are actively seeking internships and jobs, Dean Paul B. Bell Jr. spoke about the ways that the college is preparing students for careers. He told the recruiters about three academic minors that prepare and credential students for positions in for-profit and non-profit organizations. He also offered to help the recruiters contact and meet students who might be interested in working in their organizations.
Three department chairs – Alexander Holmes from Economics, Laurette Taylor from Health and Exercise Science and Rob Griswold from History – explained the skills and attitudes of students who successfully finish a liberal arts degree in the college. The professors stressed that A&S students are educated to speak and write clearly, to observe and analyze issues from a variety of points of view and to be life-long learners – precisely the characteristics most frequently cited by employers as most essential.
After lunch, the recruiters heard from Derek Dodson, a recent A&S graduate who now works for GEICO. He spoke passionately about the quality of his teachers and the importance of the guidance he received, something he did not anticipate as a transfer student from a small, private, liberal arts college.
The day finished with a special tour of OU’s football facilities, including the private suites at the stadium, the football locker room and the Legends Lobby at the Barry Switzer Center, OU football program’s museum.
