LATIN AMERICA SYMPOSIUM TO BE HELD AT OU

 

Norman – Citizenship, identity, ethnicity, communication and democracy in Latin America will be discussed at the 2007 Symposium on Latin America at the University of Oklahoma, beginning at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14, and continuing to noon Friday, Feb. 16.
Naomi Klein, award-winning author of No Logo: Taking Aim at the Brand Bullies, will open the symposium with a presentation titled “Disaster Capitalism: The Road to Iraq Began in Latin America” at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Frontier Room of Oklahoma Memorial Union, 900 Asp Ave.

Beginning on Thursday morning at 9, the first of many sessions will be held in the Frontier Room in Oklahoma Memorial Union.  Issues such as border control, citizenship in Latin American countries, and new imperialism and citizens’ rights in Central America will be discussed throughout the two-day symposium.

A free film screening of The Take will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Morris R. Pittman Recital Hall in Catlett Music Center, 500 W. Boyd.  Avi Lewis, the director, will be on hand to discuss the movie, which is a story of Argentina’s new movement of worker-run businesses.

The symposium is sponsored by the School of International and Area Studies, College of Arts and Sciences, International Programs Center, Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication and Department of Anthropology.
