STILLMAN LECTURE AT OU TO EXPLORE THE ROLE OF
RELIGION IN JERUSALEM

Norman – The city of Jerusalem has a long history of influence in many cultures.  It has seen much turmoil throughout history, including occupation by 10 different empires, governments and dynasties in the years before the British occupied it during World War I.

A public presentation Wednesday, Feb. 21, at the University of Oklahoma by renowned scholar of Islamic and Jewish history Jacob Lassner titled “The Struggle for Sacred Space in the Holy Land: Jerusalem, City of Three Faiths” will examine the role of Christianity, Judaism and Muslim in the shaping of the contemporary city of Jerusalem.  The lecture is set for 8 p.m. in the Robert S. Kerr Auditorium at the Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History, 2401 S. Chautauqua Ave.

Lassner’s presentation is the seventh annual Yedida Kalfon Stillman Memorial Lecture, sponsored by the Judaic Studies program in the College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of History. The series was established in 2001 to honor the memory of respected teacher and OU scholar Yedida Kalfon Stillman. The lecture series has become a major annual event that brings to campus scholars in fields related to the late professor’s wide-ranging interests in Middle Eastern and Sephardic history and culture.
