The Department of Sociology
One of the social sciences, the Department of Sociology’s goal is to provide the best possible education at the bachelor, master and doctoral levels by offering two degree tracks: General Sociology and Criminology.
Sociology, the study of group life, combines scientific and humanistic looks into urban and rural life, family patterns and relationships, social change, inter-group relations, social class, environment, technology and communications, health care and illness, social movements, community responses to disasters and contemporary social issues.
The undergraduate program offers two degrees: General Sociology and Criminology. At the graduate level, there are three areas of concentration:
- Criminology
- Family and Demography
- Class, Race, and Gender
The faculty at the department is recognized for their teaching and research, having received numerous awards at the college, university and national level. Areas of research for faculty members include a survey of youth in South Africa, a study of the effects of death penalty on families of the inmate in Oklahoma, family and demography and theories of deviance and its deterrents.
