Farland Stanley Jr.

Farland H. Stanley Jr.

For over 15 years, Dr. Farland Stanley's interest of the Mediterranean area, including Israel, Crete, Spain, Portugal and Italy, has taken him and several hundred students overseas on archaeological projects. He credits his students for the success of the projects, which has led to negotiations on a new archaeological project in Umbria, Italy.

“I dearly love taking students to an excavation project and I know that they will love Italy. However, behind the scenes there is much preparation before we go to the field,” said Dr. Stanley. “The important thing is that our Center for Classical Archaeology and Civilizations has now achieved the most difficult part: we have the official invitation in hand, and for that I am very pleased for our students.”

A professor in the Department of Classics and Letters, Dr. Stanley received his doctoral degree in ancient history, classics and archaeology from the University of Missouri in Columbia in 1984. Since coming to OU, he has been selected for the O’Brien Presidential Professorship and is the director of both the University of Oklahoma Archaeological Expedition to Italy and Crete and OU’s Center for Classical Archaeology and Civilizations. He is also the president of the Oklahoma Chapter of the Archaeological Institute of America. For more information, visit his Web page.
