Many A&S Staff Members Recognized at Staff Senate Awards Ceremony

The 42nd annual Staff Senate Awards Ceremony was held Wednesday, April 27 as part of OU Staff Week. Many staff from numerous departments across campus received special recognition and awards for their dedicated service to the university.

In her welcoming remarks, Debbie Copp, chair of the staff senate and A&S Board of Visitors member said, “The University of Oklahoma is great because our staff is so good. I have never been more proud to be an OU staff person.”

One “great” staff member to be recognized at the event was the College of Arts and Sciences' very own Joyce Allman, who received the Provost’s Outstanding Academic Advising Award, a high honor that was kept a surprise until the ceremony.

Nancy Mergler, Senior Vice President and Provost presented the award to Allman after detailing the responsibilities and qualities necessary for an outstanding academic advisor. The recipient should exhibit consistent superior advising, make every effort to transcend advising responsibilities, show sincere concern for the welfare of the students and display a mastery of OU policies and procedures. According to Mergler, Allman exhibits all these characteristics and more. She read portions of a letter sent in by the parents of a student that Dr. Allman had expelled, then helped to re-instate. According to the letter, it was the best thing that had ever happened to the student, and to the family.

“She is an individual who goes above and beyond the call of duty,” Mergler said.
