OU Commencement and A&S Convocation a Great Success

Sen. John McCain speaking on human rights followed by a dazzling display of fireworks were the highlights of the historic OU Commencement held on Friday, May 13. As guests filled the stadium under a cloudy sky, it was the first commencement in modern history to be held on a Friday evening.

The Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium became the stage for a spectacular evening of lights and action as graduates celebrated with red light sticks whirling in the air while seated in the north end of the stadium. The celebration was cut short with the advisory for incoming rain, but the announcement didn't put a damper on the spirit of those in attendance.

The following day, the College of Arts and Sciences hosted its 2005 Spring Convocation, where more than 1,300 graduates and close to 11,000 guests gathered in the Lloyd Noble Center. Happy friends and families were recognized by Dean Bell, and 2005 Carl Albert Award recipient Rebecca Craig-Schapiro addressed the graduates before each one walked across the stage to receive their diplomas. It was a record-setting event for the college.
