Harvard University and Nazism to be Discussed at Brown-bag Luncheon

Luncheon set for noon, Wednesday, Sept. 6, 109 Gittinger Hall

During the 1930s, Harvard University invited Nazi leaders to campus and offered encouragement to the Hitler regime at a time when it was intensifying its persecution of Jews and expanding its military strength.

This controversial subject will be the topic of discussion at a brown-bag lunch Wednesday, Sept. 6, on the University of Oklahoma Norman campus. Stephen Norwood, history professor in the College of Arts and Sciences, will discuss one of his previously published articles, “Legitimating Nazism: Harvard University and the Hitler Regime, 1933-1937,” at noon in 109 Gittinger Hall, 760 Van Vleet Oval.

Norwood’s areas of specialization include 20th- century U.S. history, American social and labor history, Judaic studies and sports history. Much of Norwood’s work has been published in major publications, including American Jewish History, New England Quarterly, Journal of Social History, Journal of Southern History, Journal of Sport History and Journal of Women’s History. He also has published three books and co-edited the Encyclopedia of American Jewish History. His current research project is a book titled “Response of American Universities to Nazism.”
