Our goal is to provide helpful materials for students taking online courses offered by the College of Arts and Sciences.
Online Orientation
Purpose:
The purpose of the online orientation is to ensure that students are well prepared both technically and practically to take online courses.
Contents:
The online orientation consists of several parts:
- Getting started and making the most of learning online;
- managing technology;
- writing and research online; and
- understanding the course management system.
Instructions for completing the orientation if you have never taken an OU College of Arts & Sciences online course using D2L or previously completed our orientation:
- The orientation is located online in Desire2Learn at http://learn.ou.edu
- Log on using your 4+4 and your OU network password. If you are new to the University and do not understand these terms, visit Information Technology's website to read more about them.
- Look on the right side of the Desire2Learn home page for the red block that says "My University of Oklahoma courses."
- Look for the current semester's courses. Note that you may need to click on the + sign to view the courses.
- Locate the course that says "Online Orientation (current semester)."
- Select this link to proceed into the orientation.
- Read the announcement on the first page.

- Click on the "Content" link at the top of the page.
- Complete the "Student Information Survey."
- Complete all the activities for the orientation, including the (5) quizzes at the end of each section.
Deadline for completion of orientation:
All sections of the orientation must be completed by the 5:00 PM on Friday of the first week of classes. Note that all times are Central Standard Time (CST).
If you enroll late, please complete the online orientation as soon as possible. Contact the College of Arts and Sciences Online Program office at casonline@ou.edu to request an extension of the deadline.
Already taken an online class using Desire2Learn or completed the orientation in a previous semester?
You may have previously taken an online course through the College of Arts and Sciences and/or completed the orientation previously. If you have, there are three things that you still must do every semester you take a CAS online course.
- Log on to the online orientation and complete the Student Information Survey located at the top of the "Content" page inside Desire2Learn.
- Complete the Declaration indicating that you have already completed the orientation. Access the Declaration on the "Content" page in Desire2Learn. Remember to read the instructions first.
- Submit the declaration and read the feedback. That's it! You're done for the semester with the orientation.
