This low magnification image shows a section through a muscular
artery (on the lower right), a vein
( elongated structure in the upper part of the image), and a nerve
(left, center), surrounded by adipose connective tissue.
Note the typical differences between large arteries and their accompanying
veins. The artery has a smaller diameter than the vein. Moreover, the wall
of the artery is thick, relative to the diameter of the lumen, whereas the
wall of the vein is relatively thin compared to the diameter if its lumen.
The artery also has a prominent tunica media, with elastic fibers, whereas
the tunica media of the vein is not prominent.
