This low magnification
view of the junction between the esophagus and the stomach shows esophagus,
with stratified squamous epithelium, to the left, and stomach, with simple
columnar epithelium organized into pits and glands, to the right. The muscularis
mucosae and the submucosa of the stomach and esophagus are essentially continuous.
There is no muscular sphincter separating the esophagus and stomach.
