Transitional epithelium (40x objective lens)

This section shows the transitional epithelium that lines the lumen of the urinary bladder. Transitional epithelium is a multilayered epithelium characterized by the presence of large dome-shaped cells in the apical layer. These cells flatten out into giant squamous cells as the bladder becomes distended with urine.
