Terminal ganglion - esophagus - plastic section (40x objective lens)

In the center of this image from the esophagus are two neurons, part of Auerbach's (myenteric) plexus. The neurons are terminal ganglia, part of the enteric division of the autonomic nervous system. These ganglia are also called terminal ganglia because the neurons are located in close vicinity to the tissue that they innervate, in this case the muscle cells of the muscularis externa. The neurons can be readily identified in sections by the large size of the neurons and their large pale staining nuclei and prominent nucleoli. Other smaller nuclei present in this ganglion are fibroblasts and capillary endothelial cells.
