| 1. Capillary |

Various tissues; H&E. The simplest blood vessel. Look for a cylindrical space bounded by a single layer of endothelial cells, the nuclei of which often bulge into he lumen of the capillary. The vessel may or may not contain blood cells, depending on how the tissue was prepared. |
| 2. Arteriole |

|
Various tissues; H&E. Look for a "capillary" with 1-2 layers of smooth muscle. Note that the orientation of the nuclei of the endothelial cells is parallel to the long axis of the vessel. whereas that of the smooth muscle cells is at perpendicular to the long axis of the vessel. |

Various tissues, H&E. Look for irregularly shaped vessels, often with a non-cylindrical cross section, with a thin wall composed exclusively of endothelial cells. The absence of red blood cells is diagnostic only when surrounding blood vessels clearly contain them. |
